When I ask people where they purchased their roller skates, Sears is the most popular retailer mentioned. Marshall Fields , Service Merchandise, Montgomery Ward, Jew Town (yeah, I know this is offensive, but that’s what the area was called) and various community stores were remembered.
I’m on a hunt for those Sears catalogs that have pictures of the roller skates they sold. Do you have any? How about catalogs from the other stores that sold roller skates?

I started skating with metal skates that had the most precious skate key that you always wore around your neck. Then I graduated to skates with the shoes attached, but no toe stops (so I just gently drug my right foot to stop). We looked forward to jammin’ at the Savoy on Cottage Grove every Saturday night if chores were completed and our parents had the money! What great memories!!!
